How to Tell When Tires Are Worn

    • 1). Visually inspect all tires for abnormal wear patterns. If the tread has completely worn away from one side of a tire or from a portion of the tire, you should replace the tire and have the car's alignment adjusted.

    • 2). Check the tread depth at several points around each tire using the quarter. The coin should be placed into the tread with the top of Washington's head toward the tire body. If you cannot see the top of the president's head, the tire has less that 4/32 of an inch of tread depth.

    • 3). Measure the tread depth of any tire showing less than 4/32 tread with the penny in the same manner. If the top of Lincoln's head is visible when the penny is inserted in the tire tread, the tire has less than the legal limit of tread and should be replaced immediately.
