How to House Train a Puggle Puppy

    • 1). Designate an area outside where you want the puppy to toilet before you bring the puppy home. If possible, place the puppy right on that spot before you bring him into the home for the first time. Wait for the puppy to squat, and praise him. Then, take the puppy inside for the first time.

    • 2). Observe your puggle puppy when indoors. Before he has to squat, he'll often walk around in circles, sniffing. When you see that, scoop him up and take him outside. When he squats, praise him or reward him with a small treat.

    • 3). Take the puppy outside according to recommendations from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This is whenever the puppy wakes from sleep, a half hour after meals and every hour until he's 6 months old. Then it can be every 2 hours. Even as adults, puggles can only hold their urine for about 6 hours because they have small bladders.

    • 4). Keep the puppy in a crate or closed-off room while you are away from home. This crate, suggests the Champaign County Humane Society, is not to be used as punishment. It's to be like the puppy's den. Keep toys, chew treats and a soft bed for the puppy.

    • 5). Clean up any accidents with enzyme-based cleaners, not ammonia-based cleaners. Puppies search for the ammonia scent to choose where to go. Because of the puggle's fine nose, he can find even old dried spots of urine.
