- 1). Place a certified automotive drain pan beneath the water pump mounting surface if it is not already there. Scrape the engine mounting surface where the water pump mounts, to remove any residual gasket material from the old water pump gasket. Scrape in a motion away from the water pump mounting hole, so as not to get gasket material mixed into your cooling system. If you are reusing an old water pump, make sure you scrape the mounting surface on the pump as well. Spray a rag with aerosol engine parts cleaner, and wipe the engine mounting surface clean.
- 2). Install a new water pump gasket onto the water pump. Make sure you visually inspect that the water pump mounting holes are all cleared by the gasket. If there are holes that are closed over by the gasket, then the gasket needs to be adjusted. Water pump gaskets are only meant to go on the pump one particular way. Install the new water pump and gasket onto the water pump mounting surface of the Delta 88 engine. Start the water pump mounting bolts in with your fingers to hold the pump in place while you get your tools.
- 3). Tighten the water pump mounting bolts using a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench and socket, along with a 3-inch extension to reach the lower mounting bolts. Torque the water pump long mounting bolts to 97-inch-pounds of torque, and the short mounting bolts to 29-foot-pounds of torque, with the torque wrench and socket. Do not guess on your torque measurements by using a 3/8-inch drive ratchet instead of a torque wrench.
- 4). Install the heater hose onto the protruding tube at the top of the water pump. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the hose clamp onto the heater hose and pump inlet tube.
