How to Remove an Oil Pan From a 1980 Corvette

    • 1). Open up the hood. Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery using an open-end wrench. Do the same for the positive terminal. Lift up the front of the car using the jack and set it on the jack stands.

    • 2). Unbolt the metal shield located at the union between the transmission and the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Locate the starter on the passenger side of the engine. Disconnect the wiring from the starter using an open-end wrench. Remove the starter from the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets.

    • 3). Locate the steering-idler arm, which runs across the forward section of the oil pan. Disconnect the cotter pin at one end of the arm using the needle-nose pliers. Unbolt the arm from the rest of the steering using an open-end wrench. Move the idler arm out of the way.

    • 4). Set the drain pan underneath the engine. Open the drain-pan bolt and let the oil pour into the pan. Reinstall the drain-pan bolt.

    • 5). Unbolt the drain pan from the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Lower the pan away from the engine.
