Fort George Museum – A Tribute to the British Raj in Chennai

The historic battlements of Fort George are converted into a museum which embodies the spirit of the British rule of India, giving visitors an accurate picture of a Chennai several centuries ago; a highlight for the history lover.

The barricades of Fort George in Chennai have withstood the tests of time, tropical weather and repeated enemy assaults, and yet stand unyielding till the present day. Built by the early settlers of the East India Company to establish trade in the spice routes it was completed on April 23rd 1644 – St. George's Day – and was dedicated to the beloved English saint. As one of the oldest British forts in India, it is a true testament of the once powerful presence of the British Empire.

Preserving the history within the walls of the fortress is the Fort George Museum, first opened in 1948 and currently run by the Indian Archaeological Survey. The exhibits are housed in one of the oldest buildings inside the fort and are mainly focused on the military aspect of the time of the British Raj. Swords, rifles, cannons and helmets of the armies that protected the fort against enemy attacks are displayed proudly, as well as the weapons of the natives such as bows and arrowheads. The colourful outfits of several ranks of the British Army are on show alongside medals received by soldiers for their valour in battles in the Indian subcontinent.

Official dinnerware of the East India Company – the corporate trading structure that once ruled the East – and the Arcot Nawabs of the Raj share a gallery, as they once shared the country. In another hall visitors can visualise the famous rulers of Fort George like King George III, Sir Robert Clive and Arthur Havelock, in the form of oil paintings. But the best account of life in the barricade is supplied by the letters of Sir Clive and sketches of Thomas and William Daniell. They provide a personal view of an exotic yet dangerous Chennai over 200 years in the past.

Although Fort George was built by the English, it was under French occupation for a little over two years. The French influences in the region are depicted by some artefacts as well, mainly the coins, furniture and paintings of the ruling family of Wodeyar. But the impressive 14 foot marble statue of Lord Cornwallis steals the show at the entrance to the ten galleries of the museum.

Apart from the museum, the old fort is filled with wonderful memories of the colonial past, like the beautiful St. Mary's Church that was built to shelter people from attacks, and the Wellesley House with its wonderful paintings. These welcome many visitors, but some buildings still house government offices.

The vibrant city pretty much grew around Fort George, its harbour, and the international trading opportunities brought by travellers. The city itself is bustling and hot and staying at a Chennai hotel can save you the hassle of travel. Offering pristine beachfront views and a sophisticated setting is The Leela Palace Chennai. Its ability to fulfil the needs of both the leisure and business traveller makes it a unique Chennai luxury hotel.
