Information About Stain Cleaning Solvents

    Types

    • Common stain-removing solvents are: White distilled vinegar, chlorine bleach, ammonia, rubbing alcohol, naptha and lemon juice.

    Considerations

    • Solvents are often stain and fabric specific. Use acetate on the wrong fabric and the fabric will dissolve. Use chlorine bleach on the wrong white and it will actually turn yellow.

    Locations

    • Most items can be found locally at either your grocery store, hardware store or even craft store.

    Safety

    • Products used for stain removal are often strong enough to warrant caution. Read all label, and never mix solvents as the chemicals can cause an unwanted reaction.

    Misconceptions

    • Many solvents used for stain removal have a shelf life. For example, hydrogen peroxide and chlorine bleach will lose effectiveness after 3 to 6 months. Check the label for shelf life.
