How Do I Take Off the Front Bearing of a 1998 Ford Windstar?

    Removing the Wheel Hub

    • 1). Loosen lug nuts on the wheel from which you will remove the hub. Lug nuts are the nuts that hold a tire and wheel on the vehicle. Loosening the wheel lug nuts just slightly before jacking will keep the wheel from spinning in the air while you work on the nuts later. Don't remove the nuts--just loosen a quarter turn or so.

    • 2). Lift the vehicle. Place the jack under a secure point of the front suspension on the side from which you will remove the hub. Jack that wheel into the air, high enough to get the wheel off the vehicle.

    • 3). Finish removing the wheel. Because you loosened the lug nuts slightly before lifting the wheel into the air, they should come off easily without causing the wheel to spin. Remove the wheel and set it aside.

Similar to a Ford Windstar, the disc brake caliper assembly is next to the mechanic's right hand in this picture.disque de frein image by Christophe Fouquin from Fotolia.com

Remove the brake caliper assembly. This is the assembly that holds the brake pads in place. It is a two-piece assembly, held on with four bolts. Remove the inner bracket and the brake pads first, then remove the outer bracket. Leave the brake hose attached to the caliper--the caliper is a small hydraulic assembly that presses on the brake pads to stop the wheel--and tuck the whole thing up out of the way without undue twisting or pulling on the rubber brake hose.

    • 5). Remove the brake disc. It's a large round steel plate about the size of a dinner plate. Now that the brake caliper assembly is removed, the brake disc will slide straight off towards you.

    • 6). Remove the hub nut. This is a large nut directly in the center of the hub assembly, on the outside. If you're kneeling down in front of your work, it will be directly in front of you. Use the 36 mm socket to remove it.

    • 7). Remove the wheel hub itself. On the back side of the hub assembly, you will find three bolts in a triangular pattern. Remove these bolts and pull the wheel hub straight off towards you. The wheel hub is a close fit and may be fouled with dirt or corrosion, so it may require a bit of force.
