What Causes Pink Stains in a Toilet Bowl?

    Bacteria

    • Some pink stains are caused by bacteria, most likely Serratia marcescens, which is believed to cause certain types of infections and pneumonia.

    Causes

    • If you have recently undergone construction or remodeling, the bacteria may have been unearthed and settled in the toilet where it thrives in the moist environment. Water with a less-than-normal chlorine content is a breeding ground for this type of bacteria.

    Cleaning and Prevention

    • Clean the toilet regularly with a cleanser containing bleach. Scrub the bowl with a plastic bristled brush and try to avoid scratching the enamel, as bacteria can flourish inside crevices. Keep bathroom surfaces clean and dry to prevent the bacteria from spreading.
