Troubleshooting My Headlights on 2006 Subaru Outback

    • 1). Turn on your headlights. Replace any bulbs that do not turn on and try again. Continue to the next step if those headlights still do not turn on.

    • 2). Open the fuse box located on the right side of the engine compartment. Look at the diagram on the underside of the fuse box cover to locate the fuses for whichever headlight beams are not functioning. Check whether the fuses are blown and replace as needed.

    • 3). Check that power is coming through the wiring harness. Open the hood and unplug the wiring harness from the back of the headlight assembly. Connect the positive lead from the voltmeter to the positive terminal of the battery and the negative lead to the power lead of the wiring harness. Replace the wiring harness if no power is detected. Otherwise, continue to the next step.

    • 4). Replace the headlight switch if none of your headlights are turning on. Remove the steering column bezel and the three screws mounting the headlight switch to the steering column. Unplug the wiring block and verify that the leads on the wiring block are clean. Unscrew the headlight switch and screw in the replacement. Plug back in the wiring block and test that the headlights now turn on.
