Types of Natural Gases

    Methane

    • Methane is the primary component of natural gas. It is an odorless and colorless gas. It is also one of the more abundant natural gases. It is primarily used in homes for heating and cooking. Your gas company will add an odor to the gas you use so that if a gas leaks develops, the leak can be detected by its smell. Methane burns cleaner than coal or oil.

    Propane

    • Propane is a versatile product that can be used in gas or liquid form. It is an abundant natural resource that has many uses, including stove-top cooking, grilling and heating. It is commonly used as fuel for buses and even cars. It is also a clean-burning fuel.

    Butane

    • Butane is one of the less abundant of the natural gases; it is still a cleaner option than many other fuels. It is often found in cigarette lighters and in camping lights and stoves. It is colorless and odorless.

    Ethane

    • Ethane is second only to methane in abundance. It is used in the manufacture of trash bags, packaging, insulation and other ethylene and polyethylene products. It is odorless, colorless and also a cleaner burning fuel than gasoline, oil or coal.
