- 1). Water your bonsai frequently. The soil around the bonsai should stay moist. A good rule of thumb is to water every day or every other day just until the water streams out of the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot.
- 2). Maintain humidity for bonsai trees kept indoors. Placing the pot in a shallow container filled with gravel and water can be helpful. Spraying the leaves and branches with water will also help the tree maintain moisture.
- 3). Give your bonsai adequate light. Most bonsai trees prefer filtered or slightly indirect bright light for healthy growth.
- 4). Fertilize your bonsai tree monthly to maintain the soil's nutrient levels. Use a general-purpose plant fertilizer, diluted to half strength.
- 5). Look out for fungus and insects which can damage---or kill---your bonsai tree. You can treat your tree with commercial or organic insecticides or fungicides appropriate for any household plant. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.
- 6). Clean and remove any clippings from the pot after trimming the bonsai tree. Debris can rot, attracting fungus and pests.
