- 1). Download and install Ghostscript so you can import EPS files into Inkscape, a free vector graphics program that uses the SVG format by default. Click on "Import" in the File menu to open your EPS file and click on "Save as" in the File menu to save it as a SVG.
- 2). Import the document into Scribus, a free desktop publishing program. Point to "Import" and click on "Import EPS" in Scribus' File menu and select the file you want to convert. Click on "Export" in the file menu to export the file as a SVG. Remember that Scribus can't accurately convert all text within an EPS file to a SVG file; Scribus drops font styles such as italics, and it doesn't always place characters along the baseline correctly.
- 3). Open the EPS document in Adobe Illustrator and click on "Save as" in the File menu. Select SVG as type to save the file in, and click the "Save" button. Choose the SVG 1.0 or 1.1 profile if you're creating the file for viewing on a desktop computer, the SVG Basic 1.1 profile if the file is for use on medium-powered devices, a SVG Tiny 1.1 or 1.1+ profile if the graphic will be viewed on small devices or the SVG Tiny 1.2 profile if the image will be viewed on a variety of devices. Select a font type, using the Adobe CEF option for the clearest small type, the SVG option for a SVG file that is supported by all SVG viewers or the convert to outlines option to preserve the appearance of fonts in logos or other artwork.
