- The simplest clay target throwers are manual powered tools that the person throwing the target uses to propel the clay disk in front of the shooter. A step up are manually-cocked, spring-powered traps, which are set by hand, but the actual throwing mechanism is spring loaded. Commercial traps used at trap and skeet ranges are powered by electricity.
- Target throwers are adjustable to propel the targets high in the air, low to the ground or somewhere in-between. They can also adjust to throw the targets at a variety of angles in relation to the shooting positions.
- Spring-loaded and electric-powered traps can be adjusted to increase or decrease the speed of the clay target. Some games require targets to fly at a specific speed, while competitions require targets to fly at a variety of speeds, requiring shooters to make adjustments to their aim to be able to score.
