- 1). Check all of the valve handles along the sprinkler piping. Each of the handles should be turned sideways so they are running in line with the sprinkler pipes.
- 2). Attach a small padlock to each of the valve handles to secure the handles in place. The handles need to be kept in the "on" position so the lock will prevent people from accidentally turning the handles off.
- 3). Locate the inspector test valve handle on the sprinkler pipes. The handle will look different than the rest of your valve handles and will be separated from the rest of the handles and labeled "Inspector Test," "Main Drain" or "Test and Drain."
- 4). Turn the inspector test handle into the sideways, "on" position. Wait 60 seconds for the water to flow properly. You will hear the water running through the pipe.
- 5). Pull the inspector handle upright into the "off" position to stop the flow of water. The handle should be perpendicular to the sprinkler pipe.
