- 1). Vacuum the carpet to remove loose bits of dust and debris. Where your rug is kept or displayed will determine how often it needs to be vacuumed. A rug that is kept on the floor will accumulate substantially more dirt than one that is hung on the wall. Use suction only when vacuuming, as the beater bar can damage the pile of the rug. If you don't know how to remove the beater bar, use the hand-held brush attachment to clean the carpet. Be sure to flip it over and vacuum both sides.
- 2). Hand-wash Persian and Iranian carpets as needed depending on how often they're tread upon. Carpets in high-traffic areas will need to be cleaned more often. Mix a mild, bleach-free dish detergent into warm water to make it sudsy and scrub the carpet with a soft bristle brush dipped into the solution. Rinse the carpet with a sponge dipped in warm water to remove any soapy residue. Use a squeegee to help expel excess moisture. Place the carpet in a cool, dry place to air-dry.
- 3). Treat spills immediately by blotting up liquids with an absorbent, clean cloth. Pick up solids with paper towels to remove them from the carpet. Treat the area with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water to remove any lingering stain.
- 4). Keep rugs away from windows where constant sunshine can bleach the colors. If your rug is kept on the floor, avoid placing it in areas of high traffic and keep it on level ground. Use a rug pad underneath your Persian or Iranian carpet to further protect it. Rug pads can help absorb impact and prevent crushing the fibers.
- 5). Store Persian and Iranian carpets that are not being used or displayed wrapped in Tyvek building paper. Ask your local home improvement store about where you can purchase this paper if they don't carry it. Newspapers and other papers may contain acids or chemicals which aren't safe for your carpet. Keep your carpet in a cool, dry place to avoid moisture. Ensure that your rug is clean and completely dry before storing it to avoid mold and mildew problems later.
