How do I Remove a Damaged Tape Manually in a DLT VS80?

    • 1). Press the "Eject" button on the front of the DLT machine. Give the computer up to two minutes to finish the current operation and eject the tape. As the computer works, the "Ready" light on the tape machine will flash. When completed, the tape will eject from the tape machine. Carefully remove the tape from the tape drive.

    • 2). Shut down the computer. Turn off the power for the tape drive if this is an external model. Unplug the computer and tape drive (on external models) from the wall.

    • 3). Attach an anti-static wrist strap to your arm and ground it on a metal object. If you do not have a wrist strap, ground yourself by touching a metal object, such as a table leg. This will release any static electricity built up in your body and prevent damage to the computer components.

    • 4). Remove the computer case by loosening the case screws. Locate the tape in the drive bays and unscrew the screws holding it in place. Pull out any data and power cables from the rear of the drive and then pull the drive out of the computer. For external drives, pull out the power and data cables before removing the screws holding the case in place.

    • 5). Turn the drive over and locate the small, 1/2-inch sized hole in the center of the underside of the drive. Insert a screwdriver into this hole and turn counterclockwise. This will rewind the tape and pull the broken part inside the shell.

    • 6). Lift up on the small tape located to the side of the drive, just below the top. This will manually pull up the tape cartridge and eject it.

    • 7). Locate the tab just behind the DLT drive on the inside face. This tab will be connected to a spring. Lift up on the tab and not the spring.

    • 8). Pull the tape out of the front of the DLT VS80 drive.
