How to Strip Wire Haired Dogs

  • 1). Brush the hair with the soft wire brush to remove excess hair and any debris. Be gentle in removing any matting or tangles. Remove as much loose hair as possible with the brush before proceeding.

  • 2). Grasp a section of the dog's hair, beginning at the neck. Hold the stripping knife in the opposite hand and run it briskly over the hair using a downward motion, carefully stripping away all of the dead hairs. Repeat, paying close attention to one section at a time, and always working toward the base of the tail until you have covered the entire body.

  • 3). Use a slicker brush to remove the loose hairs on the dog's face. Carefully strip away any matted hair around the muzzle and the eyes. Use extra caution while working around the dog's eyes, as the area may be sensitive.

  • 4). Brush the dog's entire coat thoroughly once you have finished the stripping. Use extra caution and move slowly when grooming and brushing in the groin area. Keep the coat healthy and prevent matting or tangling by maintaining a regular schedule of brushing once per week.
