- Originally, torchieres consisted of multiple decorative candles. When they were introduced to the French in the late 17th century, they only had one mounted candle.
- Torchieres can be used to illuminate any space, from rooms in a home or restaurant to the outside of a building.
- A torchiere light has a shielded fixture housing that is made of a tapered reflector, a halogen lamp at the narrowed end and a tempered glass shield at the light-emitting end at a selected distance from the halogen bulb. There are also vents disposed about the fixture to provide an airflow.
- A torchiere fixture or incandescent torchiere lamp serves in many homes as a great addition to central overhead or wall mount light fixture, complementing it with soft diffused light and creating a wonderful play of lights and shades which is undoubtedly important in any professional interior design practice.
- While the introductory torchieres were made of candlesticks and were used to lighten dark areas, they are now much more advanced and widely used. Newer torchieres are now made of halogen or fluorescent light bulbs and, along with the obvious illuminating functionality of the lamps, they are commonly used in home decoration and interior design.
- Halogen torchieres have been banned in some places, such as dormitories, because of the large numbers of fires they have caused. One danger of torchiere lights is that halogen bulbs operate at high temperature; this combined with the height of the lamps can place them near flammable materials, such as curtains. This can lead to fires, but if they are kept away from possible dangerous materials, torchiere lights are a great way to light up and add unique design to any room.
