One day you walk into your living room to find your dog chewing up a pair of your favorite shoes in the middle of the room.
So how do you stop this bad behavior and what can you do to stop your dog from chewing your stuff again? There are 5 simple steps to reclaiming your shoes, furniture, socks, kids toys, and any other object your dog enjoys chewing on until it's destroyed.
Step #1) Stay Calm and collected.
Getting bad and angry at your dog is not going to help the situation.
It can actually further unbalance your do, which we do not want.
Instead move your dog to find another object to chew on.
Preferably a rawhide or chew toy.
Step #2) Correct your dog's behavior.
Use a light touch correction on your dog's neck or hindquarters to get the dog's attention away form the object they are chewing on.
Never try to grab the object out of the dog's mouth.
This can be preceded as a game to the dog, which will only re-enforce the bad behavior.
Step #3) Redirect your dog's behavior.
If the light correction did not get your dog to drop the object, we need to redirect his attention with something else.
Try a treat or another toy that he can chew.
Step #4) Reclaim the chewed item) You need to communicate to the dog that this item he chewed is ours and not his.
To do this use your body language and energy to tell the dog that you own the object.
I like to imagine an invisible boundary around the object and me.
Step #5) Introduce safe chew toys to your dog.
) Dogs use chewing as away of calming them selves down.
Puppies sometimes chew because they are teething and chew stuff to relieve pain.
I like to give teething puppies frozen rawhides to relieve there teething pain.
Dogs are going to chew stuff so you need to introduce objects they are allowed to chew like rawhides, bully sticks, and rubber chew toys.
Bonus Tip) Create positive experience for your dog with the item you want them to chew like patting them on the head or saying "good boy.
" It just might become your dog's item to chew on.
