Deciding on a Guard Dog

Making a decision to train a guard dog requires much thought and to understand that this can be a very complicated and risky undertaking if you do not completely recognize the risks involved.
Most dog owners can teach the basics of obedience training, but this type of training should be left for the professionals.
You might be tempted to train on your own property but your backyard does not make the best place for training.
You should seek out a proper facility which has the right instructors for this type of training.
Since it is important for your dog to stay focused on instruction, it is best that you keep him at a kennel during this time.
Keeping your dog at home during this time can be disadvantageous for his overall training.
As just like athletes go off to camp to avoid distractions, the same philosophy holds true in guard dog training.
Now, not all dogs are suitable for this type of work.
Taking your pet to a professional is important to figure out if he has the right stuff to become a guard dog.
Having a mean old junkyard looking monster does not guarantee that it has the right temperament to handle this type of training.
All new guard dogs go through obedience training no matter if they have already been trained.
You might be content if your dog sits when you say to sit only a couple of times, but a guard dog must obey each command promptly.
So no matter what previous training your dog has had, the new trainer will begin fresh with a new focus for obedience.
Another key component in guard dog training is that he must be trained to accept commands and treats from only the handler or the owner.
This is really important if he is to guard a family, because you don't want him to break training and accept food from anyone who gives it to them.
A dog that can easily be bribed is not the best at guarding your property.
Let's clarify one thing, you do not want your guard dog to be trained to become an hostile killing machine.
That is not what this training is designed to do.
Its focus is to teach him to not only protect your family and property, but to also show respect to other members of the family and household pets.
With proper training, he can learn to socialize peacefully with those around him, including other dogs and cats, while at the same time developing the necessary skills for becoming a vigilant protector.
