- 1). Treat the stain immediately to avoid further damage and increased difficulty removing the stain. Color fading occurs on a uniform that is wet from sweat or other type of moisture and left sitting in a bag or pile of dirty clothes.
- 2). Soak the stain for at least 15 minutes in cold soapy water. For dried blood stains, add 1/4 cup of ammonia to the water before soaking.
- 3). Knead the stain after soaking. Apply steady pressure using only your hands directly to the stain. Fold, stretch and press the stain. Ensure the stain is covered with soapy water at all times while kneading.
- 4). Wash the basketball jersey in a washing machine by itself. Use only cold/warm water as hot water affects the ironed-on letters and numbers leading to peeling and shriveling. Use a laundry detergent with a pH level under 10. The pH level refers to the acidic or alkaline property of an item. Acidic items range from zero through seven on the pH scale.
- 5). Add only non-chlorine bleach to the laundry load to remove tough stains on basketball jerseys. Chlorine bleach can fade, stain and otherwise further harm the jersey.
- 6). Hang the jersey to dry.
