- 1). Make sure it is safe to enter the house. Be sure all potential structural, electrical and health hazards have been checked.
- 2). Remove all standing water.
- 3). Remove as much dirt, mud and debris as you can.
- 4). Remove all items such as boxes, furniture, paper products, carpets and rugs that came in contact with the water. Discard any items damaged beyond repair. Place items to be salvaged outside in a shed or garage. Keeping these items inside can help the mold form in another part of the house.
- 5). Remove floor trim (or molding) and lower portions of walls made out of drywall and wood paneling. The InspectAPedia website recommends removing drywall or paneling "at least 12 inches'' above the highest level the water reached. You must also replace the ceiling if the water came into the room from above.
- 6). Dry the area as completely as possible with fans and dehumidifiers.
- 1). Use a spatula to scrape off any visible mold.
- 2). Mix a solution of water and chlorine beach. Mix 1 cup of bleach for each 1 gallon of water.
- 3). Use a sponge or brush to scrub the entire room with the bleach and water solution.
- 4). Dry the area with a fan or humidifier. Look for signs of mold. Scrub and dry the room again if needed.
- 5). Place mold in garbage bags. Take bags outside immediately through the nearest exit.
- 6). Treat the infected areas with a commercial mold-killing product.
