- 1). Lay plastic floor protectors down in your entryway. Prop your front door open with a doorstop.
- 2). Remove the doorknob and lock from the front door. Most knobs and locks will require you unscrew two to four visible screws and pull the knob on either side of the door.
- 3). Sand the exterior side of the door lightly with a fine-grit sandpaper loaded onto an electric sander. While you can use a hand sander, an electric sander will shorten the time it takes to prep the door for paint.
- 4). Wipe the door down with a damp cloth to clean off any extra dust. Extra dust from sanding the door can leave a visible texture if not removed before painting.
- 5). Apply painter's tape to any glass or knocker on your front door. Painter's tape will protect these surfaces from paint.
- 6). Paint the exterior of the front door with a thin layer of primer. Primer will hide the original paint job and help paint adhere to the door.
- 7). Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's directions. If it is windy outside tack a piece of the plastic floor protector in the doorway with thumbtacks or small nails to keep dirt and grass from landing on your wet door.
- 8). Apply an even coat of paint to your door using a wide, flat-edge brush for the majority of the door and a smaller, angled brush for around the edges. Always use a paint that states it is specifically for outdoor use on the can. Allow the paint to dry according to the directions on the paint can. If the color does not appear dark enough or there are streaks in the paint, apply a second layer of paint.
- 9). Remove the painter's tape once the paint has dried completely. Clean up all the floor protectors and paint supplies.
