- 1). Roll out a slab of clay until it is about 1/4-inch thick.
- 2). Place your bowl upside-down on the rolled-out clay and cut out the shape of the bowl rim with a pin tool or utility knife.
- 3). Turn the bowl right-side up and line with netting or a doily, making sure that the doily is centered and the edges overlap the bowl.
- 4). Place the cut-out clay circle into the bowl and tap the bowl a few times until the clay sinks into the bowl.
- 5). Wet a small sponge and use the sponge to press the clay into the bowl and to smooth and perfect the edges.
- 6). Use the edges of the netting or doily to lift the clay out of the bowl.
- 7). Peel the netting away from the bottom of the clay.
- 8). Pinch one side of the clay to form a spout.
- 9). Place the lamp you made on a wooden board and cover lightly with a plastic bag. Let dry for a few days, removing the plastic bag after the first 24-48 hours.

Fire the oil lamp in a kiln according to the manufacturer's instructions for the type of high-fire clay you are using. - 1). Remove the lamp from the kiln and let cool.
- 2). Place a 3- to 4-inch long piece of cotton thread or a strip of cotton material in the crevice you made when you pinched one side of the bowl, leaving about 1/2 to 1 inch of rope or material sticking out. This is your wick.
- 3). Fill bowl with olive oil and let the wick soak up the oil.
- 4). When the wick is saturated, light the lamp.
