- 1). Cut off the bottom of the beer can using tin snips or shears--this is the section you'll use for the spinner. Make sure to make the cut edge even all around. Test this by setting the can down on a flat surface, cut-side down. Trim away any portion that is too long.
- 2). Punch a hole in the center of the bottom of the can. Measure from the outside in to a point equal from every edge and make a hole at this point using a hammer and nail.
- 3). Cut the sides of the can to create sail fins. Create a series of parallel, identical cuts in the side of the can section, cutting from the trimmed edge of the can toward the bottom. Position each cut about ¾-inch apart. Trim to the bottom of the can. Angle the cuts so that the top of the cut (which should end at the bottom of the can) is about 1/4-inch from the bottom of the cut. This will turn the side of the can into a series of metal flaps.
- 4). Fan out the sail fins. Grasp each metal flap between your thumb and forefinger and pull it slightly away from the center while giving it a twist. Do the same with each flap, making sure that they all twist in the same direction.
- 5). Hang the spinner. Thread the spinner onto a smooth rod that can serve as an axle, such as a thin metal pipe or a bamboo skewer. Place in a windy area.
