- 1). Cut two 21-inch-by-12-inch rectangle pieces of fabric out of the old flat sheet to make the front and back pieces. Cut two 4-inch-by-21-inch pieces of fabric to make the sides. Cut one 12-inch-by-4-inch piece of fabric to make the bottom. You can use an old sheet that is in good condition, as long as it doesn't have any thin spots.
- 2). Create your pattern and lay the five pieces of fabric on a flat surface with the pattern, if any, facing down. Place the bottom of the fabric in the middle, the front and back on both side of the bottom piece and the sides on each end of the bottom piece.
- 3). Sew the bottoms of the front and the back pieces to the middle pieces using a zig-zag stitch.
- 4). Stitch the end of each side to the bottom piece of fabric using the same zig-zag stitch.
- 5). Attach each side to the front and back pieces using a zig-zag stitch with the sewing machine.
- 6). Fold the top edges of the cloth bag over and stitch them down. Use a straight stitch for this step.
- 7). Cut a 30-inch-by-3-inch piece of fabric from the old sheet. Lay the piece of fabric flat with the pattern, if any, facing down. Fold 1/4 inch of each side over and sew it closed with a straight stitch. Do the same with each end of the cloth.
- 8). Measure the top of the bag and mark a spot 4 inches from each side and 1 inch from the top. Stitch each end of the strip of cloth, 1 inch down from the top edge of the bag.
- 9). Finish the bag by turning it inside out so the pattern faces out.
