Western motifs have long been a part of American interior design and decor. The spirit of the West is a popular choice when it comes to giving a home or a room a theme. The West creates a feeling of adventure, freedom and the American spirit. One way of create an atmosphere of the American West in your home is to design a kitchen backsplash with this theme. - One way to identify with the West, and translate it into your backsplash, is with color. Certain colors are evocative of this part of the United States and are a frequent choice among interior decorators whose clients ask for a Western look. Natural colors like brown, bronze, gold and light blues are the most common. Look for colors with names that are suggestive of the West, like Tucson Bronze or Navajo Red.
- Sketch out a design that features a traditional image of the West. Some popular choices might be cowboys, sunrises and sunsets, cactus or wolves. Design a pattern with tile colors that creates one of these images. If you need to, enlist the help of an artist to draw your design, and then translate that image with tile.
- Perhaps the simplest way to create a Western backsplash is with tile that features images of the West. You can find tile that has a picture of a cowboy, horse, or Western flowers. Create a solid color tile frame, and feature the tile with an image in the center. Or use a variety of tiles spread throughout the entire backsplash to create a Western montage.
- For a more unusual and creative approach, consider using materials often associated with the American West: leather and wood. Leather, of course, is not a great material for areas exposed to water, so a faux leather material is often used. Insert rustic faux leather tiles as part of your overall design. Mesquite and hickory are two good choices for framing your backsplash with wood associated with the old West.
