- 1). Clean any debris or excessive grime from the bolt cutter head. This can easily be done with an old rag and some water. A lot of grime might require a little soap.
- 2). Set the bolt cutters across your lap in their completely open position. This will give you a stable position, the best access to the blade surfaces and the most safety.
- 3). Hold the file at a 20 to 30 degree angle to the cutter blades and push the file from down and across the blades. Repeat for 10 to 12 strokes.
- 4). Turn the bolt cutters over and repeat on the other side for six to eight strokes, eliminating any burrs.
- 5). Repeat Steps 3 and 4 on the other blade.
- 6). Apply a drop or two of machine oil to each cutter blade, and rub it in with a dry rag.
