How to Format an External Hard Disk Using Ubuntu

    • 1). Go to "Applications" and "Accessories" and open "Terminal." Type "sudo apt-get install gparted ntfsprogs" into "Terminal" and press "Enter." This installs Gparted, a hard disk formatting manager.

    • 2). Plug in your external hard drive and wait for the system to recognize it. Right-click on the external hard drive icon located on the desktop and select "Unmount Volume."

    • 3). Open Partition Manager by going to "System," " Administration" and "Partition Manager." Select your hard drive from the drop-down menu at the top right.

    • 4). Right-click on your hard drive in the main window and select "Format to." Choose the type of format you want and the disk will be formatted.
