What Is an LCD Inverter Board?

    Definition

    • LCD inverter boards, also known as screen inverters, are devices that power the backlight lamps or light sources contained in LCD screens. A laptop backlight lamp, for example, contains a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) tube or bulb that generates light necessary to illuminate the LCD laptop screen.

    Function

    • A computer motherboard, or primary circuit board, transmits direct current (DC), which is a low-voltage current. The inverter board changes the voltage to alternating current (AC), which generates the higher voltage necessary to activate the backlight lamp. The AC voltage gives the backlight lamp power to project an image generated via the LCD system and illuminate the screen.

    Process

    • The LCD inverter board transmits voltage currents through a transformer, which inverts and sends out a modified rate of current. A transformer sends electrical energy from one current to another through internal coils. The coils are comprised of a material used to facilitate the flow of electrically charged current.
