- 1). Cut the black tissue paper to fit the front, back, top, and two sides of the powder laundry detergent box. You should have five pieces of paper that are 1-inch wider and longer than each side of the box.
- 2). Cover the sides and back of the laundry detergent box with the paper. Place a piece of black tissue paper against one side of the box. Pull 1/2-inch of the paper to the inside of the box and tape it down. Pull 1/2-inch of paper underneath the box and tape it down. Rub a little glue underneath the two sides and press them down. You should not see any tape and the paper should be smooth against the box. Repeat this step for three sides of the box except the lid.
- 3). Cover the top of the laundry detergent box. Make a slit in the tissue paper next to the handles. Slide the slit around the handles and glue the tissue paper back together to close the slit. Fold the excess paper under each side of the lid. Tape or glue the folded paper down. An optional step is to cut another piece of black tissue paper to line underneath your lid.
- 4). Cover the sides of the box. Fold excess paper to the bottom of the box and tape it down. Put a little glue on each side of the tissue paper to glue them down to the side of the box.
- 5). Cut out your decorative Japanese washi paper. Cut the paper so that the front, back, top, and two sides for the detergent box is slightly smaller than the area it will cover. You have to again cut slits on the top piece to accommodate the handles.
- 6). Mix two parts glue and 1 part water in a small bowl. Use a paintbrush to cover the box with glue.
- 7). Press the corresponding Japanese washi papers onto the side of the box it covers. Smooth out bubbles with your fingers. Allow the glue to dry for 30 minutes. You may repeat all steps to make more boxes with different designs.
