Should I Get an iPad or a Laptop?

    Operating Systems

    • While most laptop computers run either Windows or Mac OS X, the iPad runs Apple's proprietary iOS operating system, the same platform used by Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch portable devices. While each of these platforms can run games, word processors, Web browsers and other programs, specific applications often lack compatibility for both laptop and iPad operating systems. If you want a system that works with other computer software, you would be served best with a traditional laptop, while the iPad is the better choice if you want to run iPhone or iPod Touch programs. Also note that the iPad only works with software downloaded from the included App Store program, while laptop platforms allow software installation from many sources.

    Input Devices

    • Laptops and iPads differ in their primary input methods. While laptop systems traditionally use a keyboard and mouse design, the iPad operates exclusively through its touch screen. While the touch interface makes activities such as browsing the Internet or viewing photos easier, it forces users to enter text on a virtual keyboard, which lacks the tactile feedback and full key layout of a traditional keyboard. If you need a computer system for any frequent word processing or composing long emails, you may prefer the full keyboard of a laptop system. For occasional typing tasks, the iPad can connect wirelessly to Bluetooth keyboards, which helps alleviate its lack of typing hardware.

    Hardware Compatibility

    • Laptop systems generally have better hardware compatibility than the iPad, as Apple's tablet includes only a single 30-pin dock connector and a 3.5mm headphone jack, though Apple sells converter plugs to make the device compatible with USB ports and other common hardware devices. Any other hardware connected to an iPad requires Bluetooth connectivity. Laptop computers often sport several USB ports, in addition to network connections, VGA or HDMI outputs, SD card slots and other peripheral connectors.

    Battery Life and Portability

    • The iPad maintains a 10-hour battery life, giving it a longer life span than most laptop systems. Standard laptop batteries often provide only three to five hours of operation, with some netbook batteries extending that figure to seven or eight hours. If you need to use your system away from power sources for long periods of time, you might prefer the iPad's battery life advantage. The iPad's single-piece frame and weight of only 1.33 pounds also make it more portable than many laptop systems.
