- As of the time of publication, OpenOffice.org is in version 3.3.0 and no longer offers downloads for version 2.0. However, the current version of OpenOffice.org also supports PDF creation, and with greater support for OpenType fonts.
- Open your Microsoft Word document in OpenOffice.org. Make any changes to your document that you see fit. Choose fonts that are easy to read and compatible with PDF -- in OpenOffice.org 2.0, OpenType fonts and PS-OpenType fonts will not export to PDF; if you use an OTF font, it will be substituted by your default font.
- Save your file and click the "PDF" icon on the toolbar, the red icon that has "PDF" written on it in small font. You can also export your file by going to "File" > "Export to PDF." Specify a filename and save location for your PDF file. Once the PDF has been created, double-check for typographical errors and issues with the fonts in your document. If you find any errors, simply make the changes in your document and print to PDF again, overwriting the first PDF file.
- The PDF format is widely supported on any computer and operating system, in addition to being available for most ereaders and portable devices, including the Kindle, Nook and Kobo. If you use customized fonts, they need be embedded into the PDF file to be viewed on a device without that font installed.
