Consequences of a Poor Ferret Diet

Feeding your ferret with the adequate nutritional value is very important in order to keep them healthy.
Unlike most animals, ferrets have a special diet that if not given much attention to, may cause serious illnesses and troubles in the long run.
Naturally, ferrets are obligate carnivores which mean that their bodies solely rely on protein.
Their nutritional intake must ideally be high in meat based protein and fats, and low in fiber.
Since ferrets have a delicate bodily structure and anatomical make up, whatever sudden changes that happen with this kind of diet may lead to negative consequences.
A poor diet may generally lead to a ferret losing a significant amount of weight.
This means that their body is not getting the right amount of nutrition that it needs to sustain its everyday activities and routines.
Also, much of a ferrets smell depends on what type of food it eats.
You can easily distinguish such if your ferret is eating processed ferret foods or homemade meals.
If in case the food that you to your ferret are not the right kind, sooner or later he may have a different smell from before.
Aside from ferrets smell, a poor diet can also cause a huge difference in your pets poo.
If in case your ferret lets out very thin poo, then it probably means that something has blocked its intestines.
If perhaps the poo is mushy and seed like, then it may caused by ingestion.
If this happens, then you should already consider changing your ferrets diet.
If his poo is green on the other hand, it generally means that your ferret is experiences poor digestion.
If you absolutely do not know what to do, then it is best that you have your ferret consult a veterinarian for possible treatment and recovery.
A poor diet can also mean riskier illnesses for your ferret.
If your ferret experiences delayed food digestion, ingestion, or excessive intake of glucose or sweets, then it can further lead to Insulinoma.
This disease is one of the most common diseases found in ferrets for the reason that most people do not realize that feeding sweets to their ferrets is actually a bad thing.
If too much glucose or insulin is present within the system of your ferret, it can lead to pancreatic tumors which are generally the diagnosis for Insulinoma.
Furthermore, Insulinoma causes your pet to lose his weight, have depressive episodes, feel weak and uncoordinated, and decreased appetite.
If not treated early, this disease may even cause death especially for ferrets which have low immune systems.
A poor diet is not only the cause for several possible diseases for your ferret, but also a cause for you to spend a lot of money.
When your ferret contracts such diseases, the natural thing to do of course is go to the veterinarian and more often than not, it requires surgery to remove such a disease from your ferret.
Moreover, it does not stop with the surgery; a long term medical maintenance must also be performed so that your ferret will get back to its normal state.
Providing long term maintenance of medicine can truly be expensive, and most of the times, such maintenance can last for years.
