How to Create Cross Stitch Patterns

    • 1). Select your computer photo program or download one such as PhotoFiltre for free. Choose a photograph you would like to convert to a cross-stitch pattern. Save your photograph to your desktop so you can find it easily. Rename your new image to indicate this is the cross-stitch image.

    • 2). Open the photograph in the photo program. Look for a tab that allows you to create special effects (this may also be called Filter or Stylize). Scroll down on that tab looking for the word "mosaic" or "tiles."

    • 3). Click on the special effect and choose the size you want to use. A small cross-stitch pattern may use a size of five to seven pixels. Select your size and try it. Your image will be converted into tiles or a mosaic for you. If the size looks good, save your new image and print out your pattern.
