How to Make Your Own Plyometric Boxes

    Cutting out the Pieces

    • 1). Using your ruler and pencil, draw two rectangles, 18.5 inches tall by 22 inches wide, directly onto your sheet of 1/3-inch plywood. Check all of your lines with a T-square to ensure proper right angles at each corner. Leave a gap of at least 1/4-inch between each rectangle.

    • 2). Draw two more rectangles, 18.5 inches tall and 23.5 inches wide. The two different sizes are to take into account the width of the wood when butt-joining the sides of the box. Leave a 1/4 inch gap between each of these rectangles. Mark each of these rectangles with a letter "L" so that you will not mistake them for the smaller pieces.

    • 3). Draw two squares directly onto your plywood sheet, 23.5 inches by 23.5 inches, to act as the top and bottom of the box.

    • 4). Clamp your plywood sheet down to a flat surface or work bench and use your circular saw to cut out the 4 rectangular sides and the top and bottom pieces. Be sure to wear safety glasses and take all precautions to ensure safe and proper operation of the saw.

    Assembling Your Box

    • 1). Lay one of your long, rectangular side pieces (the ones you marked with an "L") down on a flat surface. Drill three, evenly spaced, 1/6-inch pilot holes along one of the long sides, 1/4 inch in from the edge. Drill three more holes along the parallel long side, evenly spaced in the same manner.

    • 2). Repeat this process for the other long rectangular piece until both pieces have 6 pilot holes each.

    • 3). Stand your two shorter side pieces up on their long edges on a very flat surface so that they balance in an upright position. Adjust them until they are perfectly parallel, about 23 inches apart. Squeeze out a thin bead of glue along the edges of the side pieces.

    • 4). Carefully lay one of your long side pieces on top of the balanced short pieces so that the edges of the long piece line up with the faces of the short pieces (essentially forming a box with one open side facing the floor). If you look through the pilot holes you drilled, they should be in the approximate center of the edges of the short pieces.

    • 5). One by one, drill drywall screws through the each of the pilot holes, securing the long side piece to the two short side pieces. Carefully hold the pieces steady when tightening the screws so as not to twist the pieces out of alignment.

    • 6). Turn the box over so that the open side is facing up and the long side you just drilled in place is on the floor. The two side pieces should support themselves in the upright position, but be careful not to bump them too hard as they are not fully secured yet. Squeeze out a thin bead of wood clue onto the upward facing edges of the side pieces.

    • 7). Place your other long rectangular side piece on top of the upright side pieces so that the edges line up, completing the four-sided box. Drill drywall screws through the pilot holes, securing the long piece in place.

    • 8). Turn your box over so that one of the open ends of the box is facing upward. Squeeze out a bead of wood glue along the entire top edge of the box sides. Place one of your 23.5 inch square pieces on top of the box and line up the edges so that they are flush to the rectangular sides. Drill two evenly spaced, 1/6-inch pilot holes down through side of the box top so that they bore into the top edges of the box's sides.

    • 9). Drill drywall screws through each of these pilot holes, connecting the top of the box to the sides.

    • 10

Turn the box over so that the last open end is facing upwards. Repeat the previous step to affix the bottom of the box securely.
