Feeding parrots the right foods is important for their health.
A well-balanced diet based on proper bird nutrition is the key.
For most parrots and seed-eating birds, the best diet consists of formulated diets such as pelleted foods, fruits, vegetables and an occasional treat.
Few scientific studies exist today that are concerned with parrot nutrition.
Surprisingly, no single authority or any specialized organization has determined an optimum diet for the parrot.
Experts do not agree on the perfect diet to follow for pet parrots but they do agree that a purely seed diet is not healthy for the majority of parrots.
That doesn't mean though that you should surrender to the easiest route and feed your parrot only with a commercially premixed seed product.
Even for seed-eating birds, seeds alone do not constitute a proper diet.
If you give up trying to get your parrot to eat healthy "people" food, you will soon discover that your bird's life span will be shortened drastically.
This, of course, is the last thing you want to happen.
Pellet foods usually contain vegetables, fruits, seeds, and grains that have all the necessary nutrients for a proper parrot diet.
They are readily available from many reputable manufacturers, veterinarians and pet stores.
For most species, pelleted food should be 65 to 80 percent of the diet.
Vegetables should make up 15 to 30 percent, and the remainder can be seeds and fruits.
Parrots can be choosy when it comes to food so make sure you offer them a wide variety of fruits and vegetables everyday.
Dark yellow and leafy green vegetables are usually excellent choices.
Stay clear of foods that contain high amounts of salt, fat, alcohol and caffeine.
Avocados, onions, apple seeds, chocolate, and mushrooms should also be avoided.
Finally, don't be afraid to consult your veterinarian for questions regarding your parrot's specific nutritional requirements.
Feeding your bird a balanced and well-rounded diet will help your pet live a long and healthy life.
