- 1). Build a birdhouse using a simple kit available at home improvement stores. Gourd birdhouses are also easy to make and decorate. But it's difficult to view the birds because the roof is not removable. Decorate the outside of the birdhouse using poster paints, if you like. Rugged or natural birdhouses can also be very appealing because they blend in with the natural terrain or habitat. Seal the birdhouse using a high gloss, clear sealant. Make sure the paints and sealer you choose will not be harmful to the birds once it driews. Allow to dry for at least a week before hanging.
- 2). Choose a location to hang your birdhouse. Hanging it close to a window will probably provide the most viewing enjoyment. Make sure the house will be safe and protected from obstructions. Hanging the birdhouse under the overhang of your house near a window or below a tree branch near your house is a good idea.
- 3). Attach each pulley to an eye screw. Screw one of the eye screws into the branch directly over where you want the birdhouse to hang. Screw the other eye screw along the same branch closer to the trunk running in a straight line with the first pulley. Use a tape measure to measure the distance from the ground to the branch, the distance between the pulleys, and back down to the ground again. Add an additional foot onto this total. Using this measurement for the length of rope allows you enough excess to lower the birdhouse to the ground and still be able to tie it off.
- 4). Attach tie off cleat near the base of the tree. Run the rope through the pulleys and down to the tie off cleat. Attach the rope to the top of the birdhouse. Many birdhouses will have a ring, but if yours doesn't, you may have to attach an eye bolt and nut for securing purposes. Test the rope and pulleys by raising and lowering the house a few times. Once you are satisfied with the motion and stability, raise the house to the desired height, tie off the rope at the cleat, and wait for your new tenants.
