- 1). Weigh your work or play activities. Buy a 4 or 8 GB thumb drive if you intend to use it for basic documents or files storage. Use a 16 or 32 GB thumb drive for entertainment and leisure purposes and store huge video files, music downloads and photos.
- 2). Plug your thumb drive into any USB port of your laptop or a USB hub port or a USB extension cable attached to your desktop. A thumb drive takes the place of Removable Disk on the relevant available drive of your computer.
- 3). Wait for the Auto Play window that pops up.If you already have saved files in your thumb drive, click on "Open Folder to view files" link below the "General Options" button and continue with your desired tasks. Alternately, click on any of the command menus displayed in the Auto Play window such as "Play media files," "Play videos" or "View pictures."
- 4). Transfer files to your thumb drive. Select Word documents, Adobe PDF files, Excel spreadsheets or PowerPoint presentations saved on your desktop or laptop and transfer them to your thumb drive. Alternately, transfer photos, music files or huge video files to your thumb drive as a back-up.
- 5). Use your thumb drive as a portable data storage device. Access saved or stored files on other workstations. Or transfer files loaded on your thumb drive from the workplace or elsewhere to your computer.
