- 1). Display your phone's IMEI (serial number) by typing *#06# on the phones touchscreen or keypad. You can also remove the phone's battery and find the IMEI number written on the phone's identification sticker. Write down the IMEI number.
- 2). Visit the website of a mobile phone unlocking service. Two trusted sources that have been in business for years are Unlocking.com and GSMLiberty.
- 3). Find your phone's model on the site you choose. Most sites will ask you to choose a manufacturer such as Nokia or HTC and then the model number for that manufacturer. Some sites also offer a standard search bar where you can type in the full name of the phone.
- 4). Choose your phone and then enter the site's checkout page. You will need to purchase the unlock code with a credit card and you will be asked for your phone's IMEI number. Enter all payment information and wait for your phone's unlock code to arrive. Typically, unlock codes are delivered to your email in one to two days; however, unlock codes for some older phone models may take longer.
- 5). Follow the unlock code directions as provided by the unlocking service. Each manufacturer offers its own sequence of unlocking steps; some manufacturers also have different unlocking procedures among their various phone models. Be sure to follow the directions exactly as provided to unlock your phone.
- 6). Insert your new carrier's SIM card and power on the phone. Wait 30 seconds and then attempt to make and receive phone calls to test the success of the unlocking process.
