- 1). Wash and dry your cushion thoroughly to prime it for painting. (Follow the cushion's washing instructions, which should be listed on a tag on the cushion.)
- 2). Iron the cushion if the fabric is wrinkled at all.
- 3). Plan out your design. Flowers and leaves are a great design option for cushions.
- 4). Choose the kind of fabric paint you would like to use. There are many options of fabric paint available, such as tubes, pens and pots. Use whichever type is most comfortable for you.
- 5). Decide how you want to apply your paint. You can trace it directly on the cushion from a tube, paint it on with brushes or dab it on a stencil using a sponge. This may depend on which type of fabric paint you choose.
- 6). Start painting your design slowly, using one color at a time and starting with the lightest color first.
- 7). Set your cushion aside to dry overnight before putting it to use.
