- 1). Hold a 12-inch sponge ball in your lap. You can purchase a sponge ball from any sporting goods or craft supply stores.
- 2). Drape wool batting over the top half of the sponge ball. Make sure that the wool lays evenly across the top of the ball.
- 3). Poke a heavy felting needle around the batting to felt the wool together. As you poke the needle into the wool, it will become tighter and more dense. Try to felt the wool evenly across the entire top half of the ball.
- 4). Drape colored wool roving over the felted wool batting. You can drape the wool in whatever pattern you prefer.
- 5). Poke a fine felting needle into the wool roving to felt it to the batting.
- 6). Once felted, gently remove the wool felt hat from the ball.
- 7). Hold the hat upside down in your hand to reveal the inside.
- 8). Poke the fine felting needle into the inside of the hat to felt it down smoothly.
- 9). Put on your newly felted wool hat.
