- 1). Place a drain pan under the radiator petcock. Loosen the petcock and let the radiator drain into the pan. If the fluid is clean in the drain pan, you can reuse it. Unbolt and remove the splash shield. Loosen the hose clamps on the lower radiator hose with a socket, screwdriver or pliers, depending on the type of clamp. Remove the lower radiator hose.
- 2). Remove the radiator's lower and upper tube bolts with the appropriate socket or wrench. Loosen the clamps on the air cleaner assembly ductwork with the socket, screwdriver or pliers. Unbolt and remove the air cleaner assembly.
- 3). Disconnect the negative cable from the battery with the appropriate wrench. Remove the positive battery cable. Unscrew the battery hold-down straps manually if the screws have a wing nut head or use a socket if they are held down with a nut. Remove the battery. Unbolt and remove the battery tray.
- 4). Release tension on the accessory drive belt by pushing the tensioner in towards the engine with a socket. If the front of the tensioner does not have a bolt on it, stick the square connecting end of a ratchet into the square hole and push the tensioner towards the engine. Lift the belt off the pulleys.
- 5). Loosen the clamps on the upper radiator hose and engine vent hose. Remove both hoses. Unplug the transaxle 10-pin connector. Remove the radiator bypass hose assembly with the socket, screwdriver or pliers. Unbolt and remove the thermostat housing. Lift the thermostat and the old gasket off the engine.
- 6). Unbolt and remove the air compressor brace if the Taurus has air conditioning. Remove the water pump mounting nuts with the appropriate socket. Remove the connector hose on the water pump. Pull the water pump off the block. Clean the mounting surface on the block of any gasket residue with a screwdriver.
