You love running with your dog.
Some times you worry about over working him.
The following are a few tell tale signs that your dog is exhausted and you need to slow down.
Pay attention to your dog's tongue.
Dog's are susceptible to overheating.
They use panting as their primary mode of cooling down.
If your dog is panting softly, and if his tongue is not sticking out excessively, this is normal and you should continue running him.
However, if your dog has his mouth wide open, his tongue is hanging out excessively, and he is panting heavily, you need to stop and rest.
If these symptoms continue after a few minutes of rest, stop the run and walk home.
Give him small sips of water every half block on your way back.
When you return home, don't let him down a lot of water.
Instead, let him drink a couple licks every hour.
Pay attention to your dog's pace.
Running dogs are usually very good at keeping up with their owners and staying at their sides.
However, if your dog starts falling significantly behind, to the point where you constantly are reaching the end of the leash, he's probably tired.
Stop for a few minutes and watch your dog.
If he starts laying down, then he is surely over worked and you need to walk.
Do not try to cheer him up or coax him to get him to run again.
Dogs love unconditionally and will do anything to please you, even if puts them at risk.
