Marine Corps Uniform Regulations for a Sweater

    • The Marine Corps issues four types of sweaters to both enlisted personnel and officers. Marines can wear an olive green crew-neck service sweater, an olive green V-neck service sweater, a blue V-neck sweater or a blue crew-neck sweater. Each sweater must be worn with the appropriate uniform, according to specific guidelines found in MCO P1020.34F Marine Corps Uniform Regulations Chapter 3. Marines are allowed to wear sweaters any time they are on the way to or from work, or on leave without guidelines. Marines must never wear sweaters during parades or ceremonial functions.

    Olive Green Crew-Neck Sweater

    • The olive green crew-neck sweater can be worn with the B or C utility uniform. Uniforms B and C are the khaki-colored daily service uniforms. The issued sweater is made of 100% wool, but Marines are allowed to buy an acrylic version of the same design at authorized retailers. Marines can wear this sweater all year long with the service uniform. Marines must wear the shirt collar outside of the sweater, with the shirt collar unbuttoned. The sweater's sleeves can be turned up, but they have to cover the cuffs of the shirt. The sweater's waistband can be rolled under, but it must cover the pants' or skirt's waistband. Marines can wear the olive green crew-neck sweater with the camouflage utility uniform, but the sweater must be under the utility coat. Marines can also wear this sweater under the All Weather Coat (AWC) or under the tanker jacket. The grade insignia must be on the shirt collar. Marines cannot wear the olive crew-neck with the service A uniform, which has a coat.

    Olive Green V-Neck Sweater

    • The olive green V-neck sweater can only be worn with the B service uniform. If a Marine wears the sweater with a long-sleeve khaki shirt, the shirt has to be completely buttoned. Male Marines must wear a tie and female Marines a neck tab. Marines can turn up the sweater's sleeves, but the sleeves of the sweater must cover the cuffs of the shirt. The sweater's waistband may be rolled under, but it must cover the waistband of the uniform's skirt or pants. Marines can wear the olive V-neck sweater with the AWC or tanker jacket. Enlisted marines do not wear insignia on the collar of the shirt when wearing the V-neck. They must wear pin-on insignia on each of the sweater's shoulder straps.

    Blue V-Neck Dress Sweater

    • Marines can wear the blue V-neck dress sweater all year long as part of the blue dress C uniform. Marines must wear a long-sleeve shirt with the blue V-neck sweater. Male Marines must wear a necktie, and female Marines must wear a neck tab. The shirt collar goes inside the sweater. The sweater's sleeves can be turned up, but they must cover the cuffs of the shirt. The waistband of the sweater can be rolled under, but it must cover the uniform's pants' or skirt's waistband. Marines can wear the blue V-neck under the AWC or the tanker jacket. Officers wear insignia on the collar of the khaki shirt when wearing the blue V-neck. Enlisted Marines wear the insignia on the sweater's shoulder straps. Officers have the option of wearing embroidered insignia with the blue V-neck. Embroidered insignia must be worn on the sweater's shoulder straps.

    Blue Crew-Neck Sweater

    • Marines wear the blue crew-neck sweater the same way that they wear the olive green crew neck. Enlisted personnel have to wear black insignia on the shirt collar if they wear the blue crew-neck sweater.

    Maternity Uniforms

    • Sweaters cannot be worn with maternity uniforms.
