- 1). Prepare a signed, written statement requesting that all or part of your military retired pay be waived in order to receive VA disability benefits.
- 2). Mail this statement either directly to the VA or to the agency responsible for paying your military benefits. You will then receive VA disability benefits instead of military retirement pay.
- 3). Complete a "Waiver of Retired Military Pay" form, which can be accessed on the Department of Defense website as a PDF document, to waive your military retired pay in order to add your years of military service to your civil service retirement.
- 4). Keep a copy of the completed form for your records because it must be included with your civil service retirement package.
- 5). Mail the original document to the appropriate office of your military branch at least 60 to 90 days before your retirement date. You do not have to waive your military pay if it was awarded for a service-related disability from combat.
