How to Dismantle an LCD

    • 1). Shut down the laptop. Unplug all cables and devices from the computer. Remove the battery pack from its compartment on the bottom side of the laptop. It is never a good idea to work on the laptop while there is still a power source of any kind connected to the computer.

    • 2). Open the display panel flat so it is in the 180-degree position. Pry the rubber screw covers from the display panel's front bezel with a thin, flat-head screwdriver. The front bezel is the main plastic piece concealing and protecting the front side of the LCD screen.

    • 3). Remove the Phillips-head screws fastening the front bezel to the display panel assembly. Remove the Phillips-head screws that fasten the LCD screen to the metal frame inside the display panel. Grasp the top edge of the screen and tilt it forward until the back side of the screen is visible.

    • 4). Disconnect the large ribbon cable from the connector on the back side of the screen. Remove any tape or adhesive material fastening the cable to the back of the screen. Locate the inverter board on the back side of the screen, or inside the bottom edge of the display panel just below the LCD on the front side of the screen. The inverter board is a small, circuit board that transfers the alternating current (AC) electrical signal to direct current (DC) electrical signal to power the LCD screen.

    • 5). Disconnect the cables from each end of the inverter board. Remove the screws and tape from the inverter and then remove it from the screen. Lift the entire screen out of the display panel.

    • 6). Peel the foil tape from along the screen's bottom edge on the back side of the LCD. Use your fingers to remove the metal housing lining the bottom edge of the screen. This metal covering houses the backlight lamp, which is a small light bulb that gives light to the screen. Remove the backlight lamp from the LCD screen. In some LCD screens, the backlight lamp is locked in place by a plastic, or aluminum Phillips-head screw.
