- Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is an operating system produced by Apple, Inc. and was initially released on October 26, 2007. The operating system includes more than 300 new features in comparison to Tiger, Apple's previous operating system. Included in the Leopard operating system are 25 applications, which can be separated into four different categories: utilities, multimedia, social and productivity.
- There are seven applications that fall under the category of utility: Time Machine, System Preferences, Spaces, iSync, Exposé, Automator and Font Book. Time machine is the automated backup program within the system. System Preferences allows you to customize your machine to your specifications. Spaces enables you to group application windows together for easy organization. iSync allows you to synchronize your calendar data in iCal and contacts using a USB cable or Bluetooth.
Exposé unshuffles overlapping windows, allowing you to quickly find the window or application you need. Automator is a system where you can visually program the system to complete tasks that you do on a frequent basis. Font Book is a collection of fonts that allows you to install, preview, activate and deactivate fonts on your Mac. - There are seven applications that are included in the category of multimedia: Front Row, Image Capture, iTunes, Photo Booth, Preview, QuickTime Player and DVD Player. Front Row provides a full-screen display of movies and photos. Image Capture transfers images between digital cameras and scanners for use in iPhoto and allows you to make slide shows with your downloaded images. ITunes plays all of your digital music, podcasts and videos and syncs through a USB cord to your iPod, iPhone and Apple TV.
Photo Booth enables you to take snapshots and video clips with the built-in iSight camera. Preview is an application for viewing PDF documents and viewing and editing images. Quick Time Player is used to play video files and audio files. DVD Player plays your DVDs with controls similar to a remote-controlled standalone DVD player. - There are four applications that fall under the social category: Address Book, iChat, Mail and Chess. Address Book stores information for your contacts, where you can create distribution lists for groups, print address labels and import information from other applications. iChat helps you stay in touch with friends and family with text and video messaging through the use of the built-in iSight camera and microphone. Mail provides an interface through which you can manage all of your e-mail accounts from a single inbox. Chess is an interactive application where you can play against your Mac or another person.
- There are seven applications that fall under the category of productivity: Calculator, Dictionary, iCal, Safari, Stickies, Dashboard and TextEdit. Calculator allows you to perform arithmetic calculations, logarithmic calculations and logical operations. The dictionary application includes more than 250,000 words from the New Oxford American Dictionary and Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus. iCal helps you plan and arrange appointments and activities on multiple calendars.
Safari is a secure web browser that includes built-in antiphishing technology and an integrated Google search bar. Stickies allows you to keep notes directly on your desktop. Dashboard contains mini-applications that let you perform common tasks and provides you with quick access to information such as local weather and the stock market. TextEdit is a word processor that is most commonly used for simple compositions and includes spell check and grammar check features.
