Foods for Depression: Eat Your Depression Away!

Eating the right foods for depression is probably the last remedy that most sufferers consider when trying to fight through the mind numbing haze of depressive disorders. However, proper nutrition, or the lack thereof, has been shown to significantly affect many people who are mild to moderately depressed. A healthy diet in conjunction with various other treatments can help sufferers begin to feel better as their brain and body absorb certain nutrients. Studies have shown that several foods in particular help alleviate the symptoms of depression when eaten consistently as part of a structured diet plan.

Brown Rice
Unprocessed rice is a low-glycemic food and it prevents mood swings and emotional lows brought on by uneven levels of glucose in the blood stream. Brown rice also contains trace minerals that are necessary to a healthy body and mind.

Fish and fish oils
Fish naturally contains omega-3 fatty acids which has been shown to add EPA to the body which in turn helps with anxiety, sleeplessness, decreased sex drive and suicidal thoughts. Research has already proved that those with depressive disorders usually have a low amount of EPA in their body.

Cabbage
This vegetable is rich in folic acid and vitamin C. Cabbage helps to dissipate stress, heart disease and even infection.

Oats
Whole grain oats contain pantothenic acid, vitamins B6, B1 and folic acid which helps a person avoid a quick drop in blood suger that leads to significant mood swings.

Brewer's Yeast
For those who have no allergies to yeast, Brewer's yeast adds a helpful dose of amino acids that are necessary for the nervous system. Those suffering from depression may feel noticeable improvement with brain boosting Brewer's yeast.

Most people's diets consist of too much refined sugar, caffeine, alcohol and various chemicals that do nothing to nourish the neurotransmitters and serotonin levels associated with good, mental health. The right foods for depression can produce a significant boost in support for a healthy nervous system and brain.
