- 1). Prepare the shoe for customization. Using a wet rag, clean the shoe, removing any dirt and dust. Dry the shoe, and ensure that no area is wet or dirty.
- 2). Draw a design onto the shoe. Using drawing pencils, trace the desired designs onto the shoe. Drawing pencils allow you to easily erase if mistakes are made. Add any catch phrases or logos onto the shoe while maintaining a unified theme. Also use stencils to add custom designs and logos.
- 3). Decide on what areas to paint--the sides, soles, shoe tongue or the heel. Select fabric paints that color-coordinate with the shoe. Using the paints and pencil traces, paint the shoe. Use a round-tipped brush to paint small drawings on the shoe. For larger areas, use a filbert brush for painting. If necessary, add two coats of paint to the shoe.
- 4). Allow the paint to dry. Avoid adding any glitter, colored glue, water-based paints or acrylic paints onto the shoe because these materials may chip or become ruined when wet.
- 5). Change or paint the laces. Add a custom color or design to the laces. Using the drawing pencils, add a logo or design. Using fabric paints, paint the laces.
